Girls On The Run of Greater Kansas City

Support OUR International Philanthropy

Mission: Our philanthropic mission is to provide experiences and resources that build spiritual, mental and social resiliency in girls. We do this through our philanthropic focus, Building Strong Girls.

Girls on the Run is an organization one of our International philanthropies supports and we have a group right here in the Kansas City area. We support two 5K events each year; each hosting nearly 3500 participants. One in the fall and one in the spring, both at Swope Park. The race brings togethers teams from across Kansas City. Each team consists of around 15 participants and a coach, a volunteer, who works with girls 3rd-5th grade. Each team meets twice a week for 10 weeks and the culmination of their time together is a party–the 5K run. During their meetings, they do an activity, learn about gratitude, not bullying, working as a team and community involvement. All participants receive a snack at each meeting, as well as a water bottle and a t-shirt to use in the race. It fits the philanthropy theme of Gamma Phi Beta–Building Strong Girls.

If you would like to support Girls on the Run monetarily, there are several ways you can participate. It costs $135 per child for that 10 week period and their 5K final event. You can give any amount and the monies collected would be used collectively to support one child, many children or an entire team.

OUR SPECIAL ROLE: THE HOSPITALITY AREA

The Greater KC Alumnae Group of Gamma Phi Beta is in charge of working the hospitality area for post-race snacks! We distribute the food donations to the participants and make it THE place to be for these events. Trust us, it’s a whirlwind of fun and giving back in action – right at the finish line of the event!

2019 TEAM SPONSORSHIP: apache innovative elementary shool

In the summer of June 2019 our chapter held our inaugural KC GPB Alumnae Chapter Challenge! We challenged rival Kansas chapters Sigma (Kansas) and Beta Upsilon (Kansas State) against each other to see who could raise the most money for GOTR KC. Our goal of $2,500 was blown away when we raised a total of $3,530 - a tie between these two chapters raising exactly $1,765 each! These funds were used to sponsor our very first team for the upcoming Fall 2019 season. We were able to fully sponsor the Overland Park Apache Innovative Elementary School team consisting of 16 fifth and sixth grade girls. In addition to this sponsorship we donated $100 in gift cards to the team coaches to be given during their last coaching session. To keep up this annual support we decided to hold a silent auction and 50/50 raffle at our 2019 Founders Day Celebration in November. Having never done a silent auction before we didn’t know how well it would do, but we were extremely excited to raise an additional $623 for GOTR KC! The silent auction brought in $445 and the 50/50 raffle brought in $178. These funds helped us pay for bagels at the Fall 5K race as well as give us money to support additional GOTR KC teams and areas of need in the future.

“We believe that every girl can embrace who she is, can define who she wants to be, can rise to any challenge, can change the world. Can.”
